Appearance
Ochi has short, bleached white hair with blue highlights streaks that covers both of his eyes. He stands tall at 226 cm, making him the tallest Japanese player introduced in the series. He is seen wearing the red Japanese U-17 High School representative uniform and does not take off his jacket nor switch into shorts when playing.
Personality
Ochi is a relatively silent character who does not speak his mind unless necessary. He gives off a calm and cool demeanor. He does not reveal his eyes, as they are capable of instilling fear and anxiety into those who gaze upon them.[6] This trait gave him the nickname of the "Mental Assassin".[2] Like the rest of the members of the Genius 10, Ochi is shown to be prideful of his position, though not to the extent that Byoudouin Houou and Kimijima Ikuto are. He is not particularly fond of celebrating after winning a game, stating that he does not "do high fives", but will still give his doubles partner encouragement.[7] He is shown to be disinterested in small talk with his teammates and opponents.[8]
History
Prior to the events of the main story
Ochi was the captain of the Hyoutei Academy Middle School tennis team three years prior to the enrollment of Atobe Keigo, Oshitari Yuushi, Shishido Ryou, Mukahi Gakuto and Akutagawa Jirou. During his time in the middle school division, he led Hyoutei to the Nationals.[4] He graduated from Hyoutei's middle school division and enrolled in the high school division while joining the tennis team. He was then invited to the Japanese U-17 Representative Selection Camp, where he managed to claim the No. 4 representative spot.[9] He was then paired up with Mouri Jusaburou when the latter joined the camp in an effort to prevent Mouri from skipping practices.[10] Ochi dropped into the No. 9 representative spot as a result of the partnership.
U-17 Camp
Camp Revolution
Ochi is seen returning with the members of the Genius 10 from their foreign expedition trip. It is here where he is introduced as the No. 9 representative of the Japanese U-17. It is there that he learns the Nos. 11-20 representatives have been defeated by the middle schoolers and that they are now going to challenge and steal the Nos. 1-10 spots as well.[11]
Genius 10 Challenge
Ochi and Mouri are the first to play a match against the middle schoolers vying for their representative spots.[3] They are matched with Atobe Keigo and Niou Masaharu, the latter of whom channels an illusion of Tezuka Kunimitsu to play the match. Mouri warns their opponents to stop talking if they want to be able to return Ochi's Mach Serve, but they end up winning the first game regardless. At the 6-5 mark in the first set with Atobe and Niou leading, Ochi exerts his Mental Pressure on Atobe, causing him to fault all of his serves and tying the series 6-6.[6] He is impressed when he finds out that Atobe had overcome his Mental Pressure during their tiebreak.[12] Ochi and Mouri lose the first set 6-7 after a 48-50 tiebreaker and win the second set 6-0 after Niou tires himself out and can no longer use his Illusion.
Mouri and Ochi start off the last set by going up 3-0 before Niou channels an illusion of Atobe himself, allowing the middle schoolers to use Synchro. Ochi then realizes that Niou had been staring at their movements the entire time while lying on the ground and is now feeding that information to Atobe.[13] The game goes to 6-5 in Ochi and Mouri's favour, all while Atobe plays by himself. In an act of desperation, Mouri dislocates his shoulder to render Atobe Kingdom useless, placing his trust in Ochi to win it. Unfortunately, Niou lobs the ball over the net, causing Ochi and Mouri to lose the third set 6-7.[14] They are the only two members of the Genius 10 to lose their match to the middle schoolers.
When Mifuune Nyudou returns to the camp and announces that the U-17 World Cup is allowing each nation to send forward a team consisting of middle school representatives, Ochi and Mouri both reclaim their Nos. 9 and 10 spots respectively.[15]
U-17 World Cup
Before the Group Stage
In Coach Mifuune's competition between the middle and high schoolers to see who can pick up more women at the beach, Ochi successfully completes the challenge by using his glare to intimidate a girl into following him.[16] He is then seen playing volleyball with her.[17]
Group Stage vs. Greece
Ochi is paired up with Ooishi Shuuichirou in the Doubles 2 match against Greece's Heracles Thalatta and Evangelos Papadopoulos.[18] Ooishi's anxiety gets in the way of the first set, much to Ochi's chagrin. After dropping the first game in the set, Ochi uses his Mach Serve to take back the second game, telling Ooishi to get a grip and stop apologizing for everything. Byoudouin reveals that the Mach Serve he had just hit has had its 60% limiter removed. After tying the set 1-1, Ooishi regains his confidence to play without worrying.
When it comes time for Ooishi's service game, he asks Ochi if they could try using Ooishi's Territory after Ooshi serves the ball. When doing so, it allows Ochi to hit a "Mach-like" return, stunning Thalatta and Papadopoulos.[7] The game is evenly matched, with neither team dropping their service games. Going into the next game. Ochi tells Ooishi to close his eyes and to not open them no matter what.[19] He then proceeds to play the game solo against Thalatta and his Silver White Light.
After the high schoolers' respective service games, Ochi tells his partner to open his eyes and get ready for Papadopoulos' service game, but due to his Mental Pressure, Japan brings the series to 6-5 after Greece double faults every point.[20] Ooishi begins to serve the next game and proceeds to close his eyes, but the ball is returned by Thalatta and hits him in the face. After he is looked after by the medical team, Ochi tells Ooishi to take it easy.[21] Ooishi continues to close his eyes, putting all of his faith into Ochi to win the first set. The game concludes with Japan winning 7-5. Ooishi thanks Ochi for opening his eyes to all that doubles has to offer.[8]
