Personality
Sanada is shown to have a serious personality. He is strict towards others, but he is strictest with himself. This is proven to be true when he asks all the Rikkai regulars to backhand him for losing against a first year in the Kanto Tournament. He also happens to be the head of the discipline committee at Rikkai. He tends to shout when he sees people breaking rules.
In Genius 192, he says it isn’t like him to break a promise.
Sanada has a strong fighting spirit, shown in his short match with Yukimura when he forcefully broke out of yips.

Biography
Sanada met Yukimura at a tennis school when they were both 4 years old. Yukimura used to call him by first name, “Genichirou-kun”, while Sanada called him “Yukimura-kun” because he was a shy boy. As all the other kids at the tennis school was older than them and no one would partner up with them, Yukimura asked Sanada to pair up with him in doubles. Yukimura also helped him get over his fear of making mistakes. They had a doubles match against their upperclassmen, and when they were losing at 5-1, Yukimura started losing hope, but crying, little Sanada shouted for Yukimura not to give up until the very end. This led to a comeback of 7-5, their first ever win in tennis. This became Sanada’s favorite day. It was also around this time when Sanada developed FuuRinKaZan with Yukimura.
Right before entering middle school, Sanada participated in a junior tournament and won as the first runner-up, second only to Yukimura. After the tournament ended, he was challenged to a match by a newcomer, Tezuka, and lost. He developed two new moves In (Shadow) and Rai (Lightning) but kept them sealed in order to defeat Tezuka in the future.
Upon entering middle school, Sanada and Yukimura made a promise to take over Rikkai and have no losses for their entire 3-year stay. He joined the school tennis club and became a regular in his first year, where he, Yukimura, and Yanagi—-the Rikkai Big 3—-led the team to Nationals and won.
Sanada became the tennis club’s vice-captain in his second year, with Yukimura as his captain. It was then that Kirihara Akaya entered Rikkai as a first year and challenged the Rikkai Big 3, resulting in complete defeat. When he and Yukimura were on their way home from school, Yukimura said that Kirihara reminded him of Sanada. After some time, Kirihara went to Sanada’s classroom to issue a written challenge, which Sanada noted was riddled with mistakes. (match details.) They also led Rikkai to victory that year.
On the winter of their second year, Yukimura collapsed and Sanada had to take over Rikkai’s tennis club. He promised Yukimura that he would wait for Yukimura’s return undefeated. It was during this time that the law of Rikkai was developed—-that is, “Losing is unacceptable.” Those who broke this law were dealt the iron fist punishment from Sanada.
On their third year, the day of the Kanto Tournament finals fell on the same day as Yukimura’s surgery. Sanada faced Echizen Ryoma in Singles 1. When Echizen used Muga no Kyouchi, it was revealed that Sanada knew of only three other people who can use Muga no Kyouchi: Rikkai’s captain, Yukimura Seiichi, Chitose Senri of Kyushu, and himself.
