Minami Kentarou (南 健太郎, みなみけんたろう) is a 3rd year student and captain of the tennis club at Yamabuki. He is one half of the Nationally ranked doubles team nicknamed the "Jimis" (derivative of "地味," lit. plain) so called due to their plain appearance, names, and personalities. He is usually overlooked as the captain of Yamabuki, most often others mistake Sengoku Kiyosumi as holding the position.
Appearance
As his nickname would suggest, Minami is a fairly plain looking person. His most notable feature is his spiked hair which is brown in the anime, black in the manga and games that utilize the manga style.
Personality
Minami is considerate and confident in his abilities as a doubles player. He enjoys a bit of friendly ribbing when he meets up with Ooishi Shuuichirou in their third year, having played one another at the Prefectural tournament in the previous year. His leadership style is the "Trustworthy type" who becomes so closely bonded to the rest of the team that his position in the Club is irrelevant since everything is a team effort[1]. He becomes frustrated with others when they forget, or just don't know, that he is captain.
History
One year prior to the events of the main story
One year prior to the events of the main story, Minami and Higashikata Masami played doubles against Ooshi Shuuichirou and an unnamed Seigaku third year. The Jimis won the match and started a friendly rivalry between Minami and Ooshi.
Prefecturals
Seigaku and Yamabuki meet in the the finals of the Tokyo prefectural tournament. Minami and Higashikata play against Ooishi Shuuichirou and Kikumaru Eiji in Doubles 1. Minami targets Ooishi, trying to exploit a weakness in the doubles combination where Ooshi will cover for Kikumaru. It is a close match, resulting in a loss for Yamabuki 5-7.
Regionals
Yamabuki advanced to the quarterfinals of the regional tournament and meet Fudomine. Minami and Higashikata beat Ishida Tetsu and Masaya Sakurai in Doubles 1.
Nationals
Yamabuki meets St Icarus in Round 1, Minami and Higashikata win their doubles 1 match. In Round 2, Yamabuki is eliminated by Nagoya including Minami and Higashikata's Doubles 1 loss.
Under 17 Camp
Minami was set to play Echizen Ryouma in the initial tie-break matches to determine who would stay in the winner's camp, however Echizen wandered off to find Tokugawa Kazuya and forfeit the match for not participating.
Anime only arcs
Minami appears in the Atobe's Gift OVA. He visits the Rokkaku Coach Consultation booth with Kuwahara Jackal, Kaneda Ichirou, and Higashikata Masami. They tell Oji that they are concerned that they haven't appeared in the series for a while. Nomura Takuya, Muromachi Touji, and Sakurai Masaya interrupt them to ask the same thing.
He is also the runner for the second leg of the relay race.
Play Style
Minami is a doubles specialist who has worked together with his partner to master hand signals strategy. He notably can hit a straight shot from a short cross shot. His strategy is to target one member of a doubles pair and break down the combination, pulling the team out of sync.
