Hyoutei Academy Middle School (氷帝学園中等部(ひょうていがくえんちゅうとうぶ), Hyoutei Gakuen Chuutoubu), is a private school in Tokyo. Hyoutei's tennis club is famous for its large size: over 200 members, who are responsible for the overwhelming "Hyoutei Chant" at games, and for their strict policy of regular replacement; if a player loses a match, they are no longer a regular. This fate is suffered by Shishido Ryou after Hyoutei's loss to Fudoumine Middle School in the Tokyo District Preliminaries. Shishido fights for his spot back, and after that, the policy seems to be lenient in application. At Nationals, Hyoutei returns to play against Seigaku a second time, with the same set of regulars from their match in the Kantou Regional Tournament.

History

Two Years Before the Storyline

Hyoutei Team First Years.png

Atobe Keigo arrives at Hyoutei in his first year and revolutionizes both the school and the tennis club. On the first day, he declares himself king of the school, and presents impressive, state-of-the-art updates to the school campus and facilities. At tennis practice, Atobe "[takes] over the club room" and declares himself captain. The current captain and young Atobe agree that if any current club members defeat Atobe, he could not join the team.

Nobody can defeat Atobe, so he becomes the tennis club captain. The rules change: all benefits from seniority are gone, and only the strongest players will be at the top and play as regulars. This eventually becomes the policy of replacing regulars who lose matches.

It is shown that Akutagawa Jirou, Mukahi Gakuto, Oshitari Yuushi, and Shishido Ryou are regulars along with Atobe in their first year.

High schooler and U-17 member Ochi Tsukimitsu is captain in his time at Hyoutei's middle school before the current third years enroll.

Tokyo District Preliminary Tournament

Accustomed to easily winning the tournament each year, Hyoutei did not bring all of its regulars to the Tokyo District Preliminaries. In the quarterfinals they face Fudoumine Middle School, an unknown force at that point. For singles 3, Shishido is the first regular to play in the match and claims he will win in 15 minutes. His opponent is Tachibana Kippei, who ends up winning– in 15 minutes. Shishido's defeat results in his removal from the Hyoutei regulars.

In a consolation match, Hyoutei defeats St. Rudolph Academy Middle School.

Kantou Regional Tournament

See Kantou Tournament - Hyoutei Arc.

Hyoutei and Seigaku compete in the first round of the Kantou tournament. This matchup receives a lot of hype; both schools are tennis powerhouses with talent that destines them for nationals, yet the loser would be unable to advance. Hyoutei and Seigaku play six matches, resulting in Seigaku's victory. Hyoutei's tennis season is effectively over.

National Tournament

Because Tokyo is the National Tournament's host city, they are able to offer a special invitation to an additional school. This invitation was extended to Hyoutei, allowing them the miracle chance to compete at Nationals. The entire school cheers for the tennis team when they learn this, the Hyoutei cheer was started from the classrooms.

Hyoutei easily wins their matches in the first and second rounds of the tournament. As the quarterfinals approach, they are set to face Seigaku once again. They are confident and motivated to avenge their previous loss. The night before the match, Tezuka Kunimitsu comments that Hyoutei has something Seigaku does not– they know how it feels to suffer defeat as a team.[1] This in part makes Hyoutei a fiercer opponent than they were at Kantou.

Anime only: The night before the match, all of the Hyoutei regulars prepare in their own ways. But by the end of the night, they all appear in the same place, unplanned– the court on which they lost to Seigaku before. Atobe arrives last and as a team they speak their minds and express their wills to win, and they are flourished with a shower of rose petals.

After the first three matches, the matchup is postponed due to rain. It continues the next day and Hyoutei ultimately loses to Seigaku.

They are seen watching Seigaku's remaining matches, and they are participants of the Yakiniku Battle.

U-17 Camp

Hyoutei's 8 regulars are among the 50 middle schoolers invited to the U-17 Training Camp.

Tennis Uniforms - Anime

The Hyoutei tennis uniform jerseys have an asymmetrical design. The base is a white polo shirt with light blue sleeves, and the left side of the shirt is light blue, stopping about halfway between the sleeve and the collar. The collar is dark blue in the anime and dark blue/black in the manga, with variance. On the left breast (on the blue section) is a white dot, and on the right shoulder is a section of 7 black stripes.

The anime version of the uniform lacks both the stripes and the white dot, and the jacket sleeves have a dark blue trim.

In both the anime and the manga, the shorts are white and the pants are dark blue/black with a thin white stripe down the side. In the anime, all Hyoutei members have matching shoes. They are white with light purple/pink round soles.

School Uniforms

The Hyoutei middle school division's school uniforms differ slightly between the manga and the anime. Both involve a white, button-down collared shirt, untucked, with the Hyoutei emblem on the top right. It is worn with a red tie. The uniform includes a gold/tan blazer, also with the Hyoutei emblem. The pants in the manga are plaid, whereas in the anime, they are brown with thin vertical stripes.
