Kaidou is notable for the bandanna he wears, which ranges from several colors and patterns. In the Anime, he is shown to primarily wear a green bandanna with white patterns (orange in his earlier appearances), while in the manga and video games he wears a blue and black-printed bandanna. His arms and legs are stated to be unusually long, which allows him to perform his curving Snake shots.

Kaidou is serious and unsociable, earning him the nickname "Mamushi" for his viper-like play style and behavior. He is often misunderstood or feared by others due to his tough appearance and unsettling nature. However, underneath his fierce exterior, he is shown to be shy, hard-working and polite.

He also holds strong sense of justice and cares for the people close to him, such as the regular members of [[Seigaku]], and would go as far as getting hit to protect [[Echizen Ryoma]] from a flying ball<ref>Prince of Tennis: Episode 163</ref> or carry an injured [[Momoshiro Takeshi]] up a cliff.<ref>New Prince of Tennis: Golden age 17</ref>

Among the Seigaku regulars, Kaidou is known take great efforts in training to push himself to perform beyond his limits. This is shown in his daily training schedule, which is noted to be three times more than a regular load <ref>Prince of Tennis, Genius33</ref>. This also reflects in his personality, where he holds a strong mentality of persevering even in the most dire situations and will selflessly withstand harsh conditions to bring victory to his team and friends.

Kaidou also has a soft spot for cute animals such as cats and dogs, however he is often ignored or disliked by them.

====Prior to the events of the main story====
Upon entering Seigaku as a first year student, he was able to talk to [[Momoshiro Takeshi]] for the first time. The two later became rivals in Seigaku's tennis club, where they would often compete to surpass each other.<ref name = "PairPuri Vol 6 Kaidou x Kirihara">PairPuri Vol 6 Kaidou x Kirihara</ref>

He also participated in the Newcomers Tournament against an unnamed opponent. Although he lost the match, he was able to hit his first [[Snake]] shot.<ref name = "PairPuri Vol 6 Kaidou x Kirihara">PairPuri Vol 6 Kaidou x Kirihara</ref>

====Intra-School Ranking Tournament====
As one of Seigaku's regular members, Kaidou is the first serious opponent [[Echizen Ryoma]] faces during the Seigaku's Ranking Tournament. [[Kachiro Kato]] reveals a recording of one of Kaidou's prior matches, showing his extreme play that causes the other first years, [[Horio Satoshi]] and [[Mizuno Katsuo]], to fear for Echizen's next match. Despite the concerns of his peers, Echizen remains unaffected and proceeds to the match against Kaidou. Early on, the match advances in favor of Kaidou due to his strategy to drain Echizen's stamina through his [[Snake]] shot, which forces Echizen to repeatedly run to both ends of the court. However, as the match continues, Kaidou is shown to become increasingly exhausted while hitting Echizen's returns that seemingly became stronger and faster to him. It is revealed by [[Inui Sadaharu]] that Echizen had aimed his returns at Kaidou's feet, resulting in Kaidou being forced to bend low to return the shot and using 2-3 times the normal strength, causing him to lose more stamina. In the end, Kaidou fell for Echizen's strategy and loses the match 6-4.

Despite losing against Echizen, Kaidou was able to retain his regular spot by beating [[Inui Sadaharu]] 7-5.

====Districts====
Seigaku, being favored as the first seed, advances to the finals after defeating [[Gyokurin]] in the quarterfinals and Mizu no Fuchi in the semi-finals, where Kaidou is placed in Singles 3 for both rounds and wins both matches 6-0.

In the finals, instead of facing the second seed [[Kakinoki]] as anticipated, Seigaku instead faces the unseeded [[Fudoumine Middle School]]. Kaidou is placed in Singles 3 against [[Kamio Akira]]. The match starts with Kamio provoking Kaidou by calling him "Viper," causing Kaidou to lash out at him in irritation by swinging his racket. He is quickly reprimanded by [[Tezuka Kunimitsu]], and the match begins after the two teams apologize to one another.

Throughout the early stages of the match, Kamio shows incredible speed that allows him to catch up to Kaidou's Snake shots across the court. This counters Kaidou's methods of draining his opponent's energy as Kamio easily returns them. In addition, the power of Kaidou's Snake shot is greatly weakened due to the ball collecting rain from the previous match. Kamio takes the lead after he defeats Kaidou's Snake shots three times in a row.

With determination to regain the match, Kaidou throws his body to return the ball after slipping, causing the ball to curve around the pole. This accidental Snake shot is named [[Boomerang Snake]] by the spectators watching due to its boomerang-like curve, and the momentum changes to Kaidou. In response to Kaidou's successful shot, Kamio picks up his speed with [[Quick Serve]] and takes the lead 1-0. Kaidou then tries to hit another [[Boomerang Snake]], however fails as the ball goes out. While losing 3-0, Kaidou becomes irritated with the low chance of succeeding his Snake shots. Despite the unfavorable conditions towards Kaidou, he manages to keep his serves and follow Kamio 5-3. At match point, Kamio uses his Quick Serve to end the match, however Kaidou persists with his Snake shots and constantly returns Kamio's advantage to deuce. It is revealed by both Inui and Echizen that Kaidou shows no sign of exhaustion due to his exceptional stamina, which was built through a rigorous practice load created by Inui and doubled by Kaidou. As the match continues to shift between advantage and deuce with Kamio's serves returned with Kaidou's consecutive Snake shots, Kamio slowly begins to feel pressure and fatigue even as he leads the game. Kaidou's ability to drain his opponent's stamina and persist to the last minute shows effect, and the match finally ends with Kaidou's victory at 7-5.

After the match, Inui offers to mentor Kaidou to perfect the Boomerang Snake after taking data of the shot, and Kaidou agrees to practice under his advice.

A Snake shot that curves around the pole. It was a technique that succeeded by chance by slipping during the Tokyo District tournament against [[Kamio Akira]].

; [[Short Snake]] (ショートスネイク)
Curves stronger than the normal Snake, but covers less distance. It is used when both players are at the net and curves around the opponent.

Triggered once during Nationals against [[Kirihara Akaya]] and [[Yanagi Renji]] due to anger after his partner, [[Inui Sadaharu]], was injured by Kirihara. Although speed and power increases, it can lead to drastic consequences. He was soon stopped by Inui and returned to normal.

==Appearance==
Something that sets Zaizen apart from the rest of the characters in terms of appearance is that he has multiple ear piercings - three in his left ear and two in his right. In the manga his earrings are all different colors (blue, yellow, black, green, red) and Kenya equates them to the Olympic rings.<ref>The New Prince of Tennis Fanbook 10.5, pg. 339</ref> In the anime, however, they're shown to be all silver, and as a first year he is shown to only have a single earring in each ear.<ref>The New Prince of Tennis Another Story II ~The Times We Shared</ref>

His eyes are dark brown in the manga, but in the anime they are dark green. He wears two sweat bands on his left arm, one at his wrist, and one midway up his forearm.

==Personality==
In a school filled with a bunch of goofy people who pride themselves on their humor, Zaizen seems like the odd man out. He's calm and collected, and seems relatively unfazed by the chaos happening around him. He is quick to provide unwanted commentary, oftentimes of a disparaging nature (such as when he calls his teammates gross or calling [[Kawamura Takashi]] Seigaku's extra baggage). His tolerance level for goofing off is quite short, oftentimes falling back on his sharp tongue to indicate that he's done.

He's shown in the anime to be initially uncertain of his decision to attend Shitenhouji because he didn't believe that he was going to fit in with the others who were naturally loud and constantly making jokes. However, he's shown later on to at least somewhat take part in the shenanigans, taking pictures of others making fools out of themselves<ref>The New Prince of Tennis OVA vs Genius 10, Episode 1, ''Prelude to a Revolution''</ref> and posting them to his blog, or like how he humored Shiraishi by taking a video of Kenya twirling his pen and editing the video to show more ridiculous spinning objects.<ref>The New Prince of Tennis Another Story II ~The Times We Shared, Bonus Episode</ref>

Despite how it may seem otherwise, he is respectful to the social dynamic between the school years, and it's evident in how he addresses his teammates.

===Prior to the events of the main story===
There isn't anything known about Zaizen prior to the start of the main series; the majority of his canon has only happened in the anime.

===National Tournament===
Shitenhouji met Seigaku in the semi-finals of the National Tournament. Zaizen was originally supposed to play with Kenya against the [[Tezuka Kunimitsu]]/[[Inui Sadaharu]] pair, but in the last minute Kenya was replaced by Chitose so that he could play Tezuka instead. Despite the match supposedly being doubles, it turns into a singles match between Tezuka and Chitose. Inui advises Zaizen that this match was out of their league. Unsatisfied with this conclusion, Zaizen attempts a poach shot that ends up easily being returned, and he begrudgingly stays out of the rest of the match except for the necessary serves and serve returns.

===U-17 Training Camp===
Initially Zaizen rejects the offer to attend the U-17 training camp because he thinks it sounds like too much work. He ultimately decides to attend when [[Hitouji Yuuji]] explains that he wished to see [[Konjiki Koharu]] and they join the losers before they go to the mountain.

When the losers return to the training camp, he ends up sharing room 205 with [[Kirihara Akaya]], [[Hiyoshi Wakashi]], and [[Kaidou Kaoru]].

==Anime only arcs==
In the [[Born! Captain Shiraishi Kuranosuke]] episode, Zaizen is recruited to the tennis team by his teammates.

[[Shiraishi Kuranosuke]] and Kenya are talking on the rooftop during the opening ceremony of the new school year. When the headmaster makes his terrible joke, the entire school erupts into laughter; yet, Shiraishi notices that there is one first year who continues to scowl. He finds it odd, but doesn't think anything further.

Watanabe advises the tennis club that per a rule in their school handbook, a club cannot continue activities unless they have an entering first year in their midst. He then goes on to explain that there is only one first year who had yet to choose a club: Zaizen. Shiraishi notes that this was the first year who didn't laugh at the headmaster's joke and wonders how they're going to recruit someone who doesn't seem to fit their mold.

Numerous members of the team attempt to recruit Zaizen by making him laugh. Each and every time they're rejected, as Zaizen either side steps them or just blatantly ignores them. Ultimately he agrees to attend tennis practice once [[Koishikawa Kenjirou]] asks him if he would consider it, stating that all they needed to do was ask, much to the surprise of the other team members looking on.

When he goes to practice with the rest of the team, Konjiki and Hitouji begin to show him the basic way to hold a racquet, and he listens attentively for a moment before he expertly twirls the racquet around his hand. Once they realize that he actually displays some tennis ability, they decide that he will play a match with Shiraishi and Kenya with Koishikawa as his partner. It becomes immediately evident that Zaizen is actually a solid tennis player, ultimately returning all shots to them and taking control of the match easily. Zaizen calls Shiraishi's tennis nothing but textbook tennis. Realization dawns on Shiraishi and he realizes that he has been trying to fit his teammates into a pretty little package in the form of a book called "tennis," whereas he should have been letting them be the best at their strengths. He then uses his [[Entaku Shot]] for the first time and startles Zaizen.

Zaizen expresses that he is not well suited to becoming a member of Shitenhouji due to the fact that he was a serious person by nature who didn't laugh at the same jokes as they did. He explains it as a dissonance. Shiraishi encourages him and tells him that it doesn't matter whether or not he was the straight man or the funny man, that what was important is that he was true to himself. Zaizen is later shown to become a member of the team and is given a kokeshi doll as a gift from Watanabe.

==Playstyle==
At this time he doesn't have a set play style dictated by the manga because other than his limited participation in the match with Chitose against the Tezuka/Inui pair, he has not been shown playing. The only known information is that he's an All-Rounder and that the team refer to him as their genius similar to Seigaku's [[Fuji Shuusuke]] and [[Hyoutei]]'s [[Oshitari Yuushi]].

There are several points in the anime where he is shown playing and he displays the ability to quickly analyze a play, predict where the ball is going to land, and get behind it to return it easily. The best example of this is in the anime-only match against Shiraishi/Kenya when Zaizen gets behind every ball that Kenya returns, despite the fact that Kenya plays a skilled game of speed tennis.
